technical sheet:

A wine made from grapes grown within the castle walls, as well as other vineyards in the surrounding district. It truly represents the singular character of Cuzcurrita wines, demonstrating, year to year, the maximum potential that they can achieve.

The 2011 vintage was rated as Excellent by the Control Board of the Rioja appellation, for the second successive year. With very favourable climate conditions and virtually no problems from pests or diseases, the vines were able to remain in excellent health and vegetative condition till the end of the growing cycle. Despite it being a very dry year, the vines did not suffer from the drought, thanks to the deep roots of the old vines grown in sandy soils with good water retention capacity at deeper levels.

Ripening was slow and gradual and harvesting started in the first week in October, a little earlier than normal.

The grape is tempranillo and all the vines are old, unirrigated and goblet pruned. The yield obtained is low with only 1.2 kilos of grapes per vine plant on average and a grape -wine yield of 63 percent

Harvested into 20-kilo crates, selection of the clusters on a sorting table. The grapes are stemmed and crushed by rollers. Fermentation at 28º C with long maceration in conical vats with a capacity of 15,000 litres. Malolactic fermentation takes place in fine-grained, medium-toasted French-oak barriques, 1/3 new, 1/3 used for one previous wine and 1/3 with two wines. The wine was then aged on the lees in the same oak for 12 months. Later it was left for 4 months in large concrete vats until bottling in March 2013.

A red wine with a striking black-cherry colour. Intense, elegant aromas on the nose, with red and black fruit, such as ripe dark plums, blueberries and redcurrants. Some mineral and spicy notes such as cinnamon, cocoa and liquorice. Smooth and supple palate with soft mouth-wrapping tannins. Balanced, elegant and complex with a long, pleasant finish and great aromatic persistence.
